Thatch speaks of warmth and welcome, a rural association in an age of advancing technology. Many of the 100,000 UK thatched properties are either listed or located in Conservation areas, dictating the need for planning consent if alterations are required. Insurance premiums are generally higher, because when a fire does occur, its results are usually severe. However many advisory thatching authorities consider the threat grossly overstated.
